Announced: TWO DEAD from Dark Horse in 2016!

Dark Horse has officially announced Two Dead, a 10-issue series I'm doing with writer Van Jensen (The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, Pinocchio: Vampire Slayer), slated to debut August 2016! It's a trippy, bizarre psychological noir detective tale that's set in my hometown  of Little Rock, Arkansas in 1947, based on true events.

Here's an exclusive interview with Van and I at ComicBook.com.

More info soon!

Team MARCH in Little Rock for Arkansas Literary Festival next weekend!

I'll be returning to my beloved hometown April 25th-27th for the Arkansas Literary Festival, along with collaborators John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, to discuss our graphic novel trilogy March. Here are two scheduled events:

* Saturday, April 26th: "Illustration" panel discussion with Kadir Nelson and Colleen Doran. Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, 4:00 pm.

* Sunday, April 27th: "March: Book One" presentation and panel discussion with John Lewis and Andrew Aydin. Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, 1:30 pm. (Space will fill quickly-- get there early!)

I'm pretty sure both events will have signings immediately afterward.

I'll also be in Fayetteville, AR the following weekend on May 3rd, doing a presentation, Q&A, and signing at the public library-- more on that in the coming days!

R.I.P. Mason Mauldin

Sugar And The Raw, 2008 (Mason seated at center). Photo by Matthew Martin.
Little Rock lost another good fellow too soon-- Mason Mauldin, a solid fellow best known as frontman for Sugar And The Raw and Big Boots and more recently a skilled airplane pilot, passed away yesterday in a terrible accident. Thoughts and love going out to all those affected, and all the intertwined friends in our community. You are sorely missed, Mason!

Here's a clip from KTHV news on Mason and the LR music scene's reaction to his loss.

And here's a clip of Big Boots playing in 2007:

Soophie Nun Squad's 1st album now available digitally!

I've been working up a new archive site for Harlan Records, the punk record label I ran from 1994-2010, and i just put up Soophie Nun Squad's long out-of-print first album, Don't Let Them Take You Alive from 1997.

(cut to the chase and download it here!)

I'll be continuing to archive every release over the coming weeks... more soon!

new Harlan Records archive site is up!

From 1994-2010 I ran a small DIY punk label called Harlan Records. That label (and its accompanying site) and defunct, so I thought I'd start up a new site to document all of those moldy old releases and bands.

I'm still working out the kinks-- but the first release is up now. Soophie Nun Squad's "We Ate Slayer" demo tape from 1994!

Please email me at seemybrotherdance@yahoo.com if you have any photos or videos of any of the bands. Thanks!

20th anniversary of publishing comics!

This week marks the 20th anniversary of publishing my first comic--  D.O.A. #1, with the combined creative efforts of Michael Lierly, Nathan Wilson, and Alan Short. We printed up 100 copies under cover of darkness in late September 1992, and sold them on shelves at Collector's Edition Comics as well as out of our backpacks at school in North Little Rock, AR.

(D.O.A. #1 cover-- art by Mike Lierly, colors by me.)

To our surprise, the print run sold out by the time issue #2 hit the stands around Thanksgiving 1992. This encouraged us to continue a bi-monthly print schedule as we worked on writing all 50 issues of the series, but naturally by the time #4 hit shelves, we were neck-deep in a number of spin-off title ideas, writing songs for our fledgling band Soophie Nun Squad, laying groundwork on a small record label and punk zine, and figuring out how to make all of these projects work together.

(D.O.A. #2 interior page-- pencils by me, inks by Mike.)

I never looked back from these early efforts, and was just as serious about telling stories and communicating ideas through comics as I am today. I feel so fortunate to have had this kind of tunnel vision since age 11, when Mike Lierly (who had already been working on earlier incarnations of D.O.A. with Nate Wilson and Alan Short) suggested we make comics together as we rode to a week-long summer camp in his parents' minivan.

(Mike and I trying to "go pro", 1991.)

D.O.A. and its spin-off titles, coupled with shop owner Michael Tierney's decade-prior underground comic Wildstars, were part of a small early-mid 90's self-publishing scene in Little Rock. Books by area cartoonists Ron MacAdoo (now of Backyard Entertainment), Jeff Jackson, Chris Raymond, Jason Binfliff, Graham Westerlund, Ben Nichols (now of Lucero fame), and Ken Edge began surfacing as well, all learning from each other as we went, sometimes having never spoken in person about these various comics efforts.

I truly don't know what I would've done if not for the possibilities opened to me through comics storytelling. Thanks to everyone I've collaborated with, everyone who has provided criticism, feedback, and advice over the last two decades, who has written or spoken to me at a convention, and readers willing to put up with my weird-ass stories.

Here's to tunnel vision and dedication.

(Mike Lierly continues his narrative path as a painter, and was also a member of the bands Soophie Nun Squad, Tem Eyos Ki, Boomfancy, Gioteens, Divorce Chord, and Universe. Nathan Wilson is a Bay Area tech wizard who is still cooking up an epic sci-fi/fantasy comic with me, and was a crucial behind-the-scenes force in Soophie Nun Squad. Alan Short is a member of Little Rock area metal bands Holy Angell, Deadbird, Zucura, and Seahag, and was also a member of Soophie Nun Squad and Them Of Delphi. We all remain best friends for life, though our paths cross less frequently.)

Illustration in FLUKE #10, out now!

I did an illustration (and a variant cover) for the new issue of Fluke zine, hot off the presses! It features interviews with Burt Taggart (The Big Cats, Max Recordings, Chino Horde, Five-0), Emily's Army (Billy Joe Armstrong's teenage son's band), Mystic Knights of the Cobra, Anna Joy Springer (Blatz/ Gr'ups), and more.

Fluke is a punk zine started in my hometown of North Little Rock in 1991 by Matthew Thompson, Steve Schmidt, and Jason White, and is carried on today by Matthew in his home of Tucson, AZ. Order issues here. Thanks!

Signing in Little Rock AR, April 14th!

I'll be doing a signing at The Comic Book Store (9307 Treasure Hill Rd.) in my hometown of Little Rock AR on Saturday, April 14th from 12-2pm. In addition to tons of books, I'll also have original artwork for sale.

This year marks 30 years of business for Collector's Edition/The Comic Book Store, and also marks 20 years since owner Michael Tierney was kind enough to offer shelf space for my first comic, D.O.A. #1, with co-creators Mike Lierly and Nathan Wilson in 1992. It's great to bring it all back home again!

The Facebook event page is here.

And if you haven't, please check out the info on my exhibit the evening prior at the Historic Arkansas Museum (200 E. 3rd St.), April 13th from 5-8 pm.

CROSS SECTIONS exhibit opens in Little Rock AR, 4/13!

I have an exhibit of comics and illustration work from 1998 to present, focusing on the graphic novel work of the last five years (The Year Of The Beasts, The Silence Of Our Friends, Any Empire, Swallow Me Whole), coming to the Historic Arkansas Museum (200 E. 3rd St.) in Little Rock, AR from April 13th to June 1st!

The exhibit, entitled Cross Sections, will have an opening reception on Friday, April 13th from 5-8pm. All pieces are for sale, and graphic novels will be available in the bookstore as well.

The opening will have musical accompaniment by Little Rock's own Isaac Alexander (Boondogs, The Easys, Big Silver), drinks aplenty, and food and soup tasting from Sharea Soup.

The Facebook event page is here.

If you're around town, I'll be signing at The Comic Book Store (9307 Treasure Hill Rd.) on Saturday, April 14th from 12-2pm. More original artwork will be available there as well.

Here's my artist statement for the show:

Cross Sections.

These are slices of much longer narratives developed from 1998 to the present. Viewing long-form comic book work in a gallery setting has its difficulties—each story or graphic novel I create sits as a single body of work, but is also made of 200-300 individual pieces, each then comprised of 5 or 6 panels, all of which are intended to be absorbed as part of the larger body, but which must also hold their own, free of sequential context.

With this exhibition, I present core samples from more than a dozen different projects over 14 years. The first period of work, from 1998 to about 2005, is defined by focus on failed communication, guilt, transience, and thinly-veiled desire. The second era, lasting until about 2008, is more focused on unassuming depictions of highly subjective experiences and characters, finally exploring dread, menace, selfishness, and loss of control. Works from 2009 to 2012 condense these questions, reintroducing them as more pointed narratives about Southern culture, shifting notions of identity, questionable legacies, and the threat of violence.

Many of my narratives are ambiguous or open-ended, and some readers are uncomfortable with the absence of a clearly established viewpoint. I’m personally drawn most to stories that demand multiple visits, those that contain the strong possibility of multiple true perspectives, and those that respect an audience’s ability to explore those questions themselves. My work is increasingly defined by questions that invite (and require) the reader to meet me halfway, invest some of their own lives into the narrative, and emerge from a unique and immersive reading experience with questions and dialogue of their own.
